Ring and Pinions 101.

Ring and Pinion Gears are the center of the differential assembly that sends power through the axles to the wheels. Why or when should you change them beside mechanical failure? Here are some reasons:

To increase mileage

Gain top end speed

To regain normal torque and power after putting bigger wheels and tires on your vehicle.

You should consider what kind of Ring and Pinion to buy for the use it will see, the price you want to pay or both. There are options and we explain them below by brand.

Platinum Torque Ring and Pinion: This is an inexpensive ring and pinion of good quality that is appropriate as a replacement. It is also an acceptable option for re-ratio applications when lifting a truck and adding bigger wheels and tires. Perfect for off road applications and street use alike. These gears come in 8620 steel and are heat treated in a standard method. These will not be as quiet running as the Motive Gear ring and pinions, but they will get quieter as they are broken in. Not that they are real noisy mind you, just not super quiet like the Motive Gear line. More...

Motive Gear Stock Performance Ring and Pinion: These are considered by all in the industry to be equal if not better quality as original equipment (O.E.) from the auto maker. These ring and pinions run quiet and are very durable. Some installers claim they look better made than O.E. These ring and pinion gears are made of virgin 8620 steel and receive a high tech computer controlled heat treatment and are easy to set up.

Motive Gear Performance High Performance Ring and Pinion Series: This is a favorite with racers and competitors all over the world as well as with the muscle car & sports car world. These are the quietest gears on the market and the strongest. Made with virgin 8620 steel these ring and pinions receive the following processes in production:

  • CNC start to finish
  • Index Tooth Spacing
  • Central Contact Pattern
  • Computer controlled heat treatment
  • Deep Cycle Normalizing

Motive Gear Performance AX Series: The AX series has all the make features as the High Performance ring and pinion series and then some. The AX is the first ever production lightened gear set. The AX has up to 2 pounds of rotating weight removed from the back of the ring gear. Then the gear is heat treated with a proprietary computer controlled heat treatment. Note: Post production lightening weakens the gear and has a high failure rate.

The AX is also available with a micro polishing finish that decreases friction and further strengthens the gears.

The AX is a highly valued by racers as the difference between qualifying and winning can be made by removing some weight.

The AX is also available for Pro Drag applications in 9310 steel.

The AX is currently on available for Ford 9 Inch applications.

Ring and Pinion Identification: When you want to know what kind of Ring and Pinion gears are in your vehicle you need to identify the differential type. The quickest way to do this is to read the information stamped on the outside of the housing. However, not all the information you need may be stamped on it or it may be so dirty and worn that you cannot find it to read it. If that be the case you need to count the number of bolts and observe the shape of the cover plate and use our chart to identify it that way.
